A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2010 NEWS
NEXT MEETING
SUNDAY FEBRUARY 28th from 2pm:
Talk and Slide Show by Andrew Ingram At Runcton Holme.
LAST MEETING
Sunday 20th December, KLOGG Annual Xmas Bash.
Numbers were down on last year. However, the weather did not put everyone off, with some hardy souls managing to come from as far away as Birmingham, Coventry, Ilford, Ipswich and Norwich. The Fat Controller (John Hobden) was stuck in Brussels, so the fetching of the test track, delivery of same to the meeting, taking it back again, and the organising of the competitions was left to Ken and Shirley. Entries were down on last year, but the newly introduced photo competition was very well patronised for a first time. Bruce Pinchbeck was drafted in to be the MC and announce the winners and Betty Flower again awarded the prizes. As usual, the food was delicious, and I think everyone enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Bob P. for organising the event, everyone who helped erect and dismantle the test track, Bruce Pinchbeck for his assistance at short notice, and Runcton Holme Social Club for their hospitality.
The results of the competitions were as follows:-
Lloyds Bank Trophy: Phil Abbot - GWR Duke 4-4-0 'The Lizard'
Graham Clear Trophy: Alan Summers - Claude Hamilton
Strangers Trophy: John Gardiner - LNER Breakdown Train
Frank Rhooms Trophy: Paul Bason - Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0
Ward Gethin Trophy: Alan Summers - Claude Hamilton
Bernard Flower Trophy (Photos): Mike Bootman - Woman Fireman

LAST MEETING
November 15 - Film show and 2010 Diary Planning At Runcton Holme Social Club: John Sleeth kindly brought a projector and got it up and running to show a selection of the late Frank Roomes' films. Most were unlabelled, so it was pot luck. There was some interesting archive footage amongst the ones shown in a typical home-movie style; and the sixteen members who attended seemed to enjoy them.
2010 Diary planning was virtually non existent. Between spool changes, Bob and I managed to work out dates for the Talk in February, Mid-Summer bash Film Show, and Xmas bash, all at Runcton Holme, with dates coming from other sources. This still left a few gaps. Thanks to John Sleeth for playing projectionist, Bob for organising everything, and helping me sort out a few dates for the diary, and thanks to Runcton Holme for their hospitality.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 15th from 2 pm:
Film show and 2010 Diary Planning At Runcton Holme
LAST MEETING
Sunday October 11: Running Day on Steve's mixed gauge ("0" TO 5") Garden Line and loft layout:
A very successful meeting. The weather was quite windy, but dry and sunny. About eleven members attended, although it was difficult to count heads with nobody staying in one place for long enough. With his hernia operation due the following Thursday, Steve did not feel fit enough to run his live steam locos, so my 5" gauge Dock tank 'Butch' and driving trolley finally got an airing after much fettling by Ken, and ran like a dream. Still a bit more fettling to do on it though. We also took Ken's newly painted 5" gauge Metropolitan Bo-bo to run. Besides Ken and myself, several members had a go at driving both locos, all with idiot grins on faces. John Hobden also brought his two part-built 5" gauge M&GN brake vans (one more complete than the other), just for show.
After we'd all had enough of riding round, I ran my 16mm, battery operated Groudle Glen Railway Polar Bear round on the '0' gauge rails for a while. All 5" gauge rolling stock was then put back on the track for a static photo session, until Steve brought down some of his Hornby locos and rolling stock to run for everyone. Throughout the meeting, Steve's loft layout was also in action, being supervised by David Ross, for anybody interested, and visiting electric '0' gauge locos to run on.
Thanks to Steve, Gillian and David for their hospitality, in particular Gillian for the most welcome tea and biccies. Hope the cats weren't too upset about having their home and garden invaded by strangers. The latest news is that Steve's hernia operation went smoothly and he is now back to fighting fitness once again.
PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION
Here are the rules for the KLOGG Xmas Bash Photographic Competition: Subject matter to be of your choice; Maximum number of photos that can be entered by a single entrant will be three; Maximum size of photo: 8" x 10" (A4); The competition will be open to all KLOGG members and associates to take part. These rules are provisional for this first time of holding the competition, but may be modified in future years.
Please do not forget the KLOGG Annual Xmas Bash at Runcton Holme, December 20th from 10 am. Please let Bob Pearman know if you wish to attend.
The KLOGGIES CHRISTMAS LUNCH Menu is now available
Test Track will be running, the usual competitions will take place and the usual traders will be present. ASSISTANCE WITH PUTTING UP AND TAKING DOWN THE TEST TRACK WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

NEXT MEETING
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 27th from 2 pm:
Running Day at Norfolk Joint Railway.
LAST MEETING
Visit to Wally & Carol's Outdoor Layout,
The morning started overcast in Newton, and thinking that it wasn't going to be very nice for Wally and Carol's open day, but the clouds did disappear in time, and it turned out to be a beautiful day. Perfect for playing trains. Unfortunately, only half a dozen attended. I expect most members were at Southwold. There was a bit of visiting stock running. Alan Summers' little GE engine seemed to be having trouble pulling a rake of coaches, but had no trouble running round on its own. Wally still seems reluctant to show us something of his running, but was eventually persuaded to get one of his locos and a rake of wagons out for an airing. Next time, Wally, we are not going home until we have seen every item of your stock running. Thanks to Wally and Carol for their hospitality.
THE BERNARD FLOWER TROPHY
A correction is needed to the report in the last newsletter regarding the new KLOGG trophy, during a conversation had with Betty at the KLOGG Summer Bash. It seems there is just ONE trophy. She actually meant that ladies could enter as well. Which, naturally, is the case with all the KLOGG trophies; and before you say the ladies don't build models, there are a few out there that do, but the reason more women don't build models is because they're just too darn busy! However, it is still not clear whether the subject has to be railway orientated, or whether it can be a photo of the family cat, or your grandchild having just woken up from falling asleep in a bowl of ice cream (yuk!) - yes, we've all seen them on YBF haven't we?), will be discussed at the next meeting at John Hobden's. So apologies to Betty for getting the wrong end of the stick.
Please do not forget the KLOGG Annual Xmas Bash at Runcton Holme, December 20th from 10 am. Please let Bob Pearman know if you wish to attend. Test Track will be running, the usual competitions will take place and the usual traders will be present. ASSISTANCE WITH PUTTING UP AND TAKING DOWN THE TEST TRACK WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

LAST MEETING
5 July, Test Track running and Buffet at Runcton Holme Social Club: Numbers were down on last year, with not so many traders in attendance. The weather was dry and hot, but not as humid and last year. It did rain in the afternoon, but stopped before all was packed away. Plenty of locos and stock out on the track for first time. Betty Flower also brought along the new Bernard Flower trophy that she had had made for the photography competition at the Christmas Bash (see photo attached). apparently there is two, one for the ladies and one for the men, even though only one was brought along. Still not sure what the photo subject, possibly a free-for-all. Thank you, once again for Bob P for organising such an enjoyable event, John H. for bring the test track, all members who helped to put it up and take it down again, and Runcton Home Social Club for their hospitality.

23 July- Marham Airshow: Only three Kloggies attended. Climbing up on top of either of the two scaffold towers, supplied by John Hobden and John Walker Smith enabled a view straight down the main runway.
Aircraft flying were Vulcan, Lancaster, Spitfire, Hurricane, Red Arrows, DH. Venom, Meteor, and Hunter, followed by low level 'attacks' on airfield by USAF as a finale.

JUNE 14 Running Day on Ron Watts' Garden Layout: A good day for a running session with dry and virtually unbroken sunshine. fifteen members attended. Unfortunately, no running was done because Ron's home-made controller had packed up. But everyone enjoyed a good natter anyway. TEST TRACK AND BUFFET DAY AT RUNCTON HOLME
Sunday July 5th,
Bob Pearman is getting a little worried because he has not had many applicants for the above meeting in July. Jenny, the RHSC manageress, needs to know as soon as possible how many to cater for. Please let Bob Pearman know as soon as possible if you wish to attend.
MAY 2009 NEWS
NEXT MEETING
SUNDAY MAY 10th from 2 pm:
Running Day at Stamford East Layout.
LAST MEETING
Sunday 19th April, Brake Van Working Day: Seven KLOGGIES turned up to continue improvements to the M&GN brakevan. The weather was perfect for working; dry, sunny, not too hot, not too cold. We also had live music while we worked, courtesy of John's son, Noel, and his band. They must be good, even the neighbours approved! Not sure that the cats agreed though.
The work carried out was the end stanchions, made last year, were offered up to the ends and holes drilled in the appropriate places ready to be bolted on after painting. The end not painted last year, was rubbed down and both ends were painted. One of the brackets was removed and the rotten wood behind was scraped away and the bracket left off to allow the remaining wood to dry out before filling.
Thanks to John and Jenny for their hospitality, and Noel and Co. for the entertainment.
KLOGG SUMMER TEST TRACK AND BUFFET DAY
Please note that in view of the previous dates for the TT & Buffet clashing with model railway exhibitions, etc., the change of date for the above mentioned meeting is now 5th July, same start time.

LAST MEETING
MARCH 15 Running day at Ken de-Groome's Rickmansworth layout: About 12 members attended. Weather was fine. There was plenty of locos and stock running, but the star of the show had to be Bob Pearman's latest acquisition of a Heljan Class 37 Diesel.

LAST MEETING
SUNDAY FEBRUARY 15th
Talk and slide show by Andrew Ingram at Runcton Holme Social Club: The twelve Kloggies attending were privileged to be the first to hear one of a brand new series of talks given by Andrew entitled "Steaming around Britain", this one featuring the Great Northern Railway area. He showed many unusual, and never seen before slides, mainly black and white, and some taken from glass plates. Andrew's lively and friendly manner, made the talk very entertaining, with a few interjections from members, including a few items of new information, unknown to Andrew, and which he duly noted down for his future reference.
Thanks Andrew for the talk, to Bob P. for organising the talk, Runcton Holme for their hospitality, and all who attended for making Andrew's efforts worthwhile.
FUTURE MEETINGS
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SUMMER BUFFET HAS MOVED FROM JUNE TO JULY, AND RUNNING DAY ON RON WATTS GARDEN RAILWAY HAS MOVED FROM JULY TO JUNE.
HAPPY 2009 From all the Kloggies

DECEMBER 2008 NEWS
NEXT MEETING
Sunday 21st December From 10 am:
KLOGG Annual Xmas Bash, at Runcton Holme Social Club
GENTLE REMINDER TO ALL LAST YEAR'S COMPETITION WINNERS:
Please remember to return the trophies awarded to you last year, so that we
can award them to this year's winners.
LAST MEETING
Sunday 23 November: Film Show, 2009 Programme Planning and general
natter at Runcton Holme Social Club. About ten members attended.
amongst the DVDs shown were the moving of a signal box to a new location,
excerpt from the latest free DVD with Railway Modeller about Pete
Waterman's layout, some archive footage of the London Underground
including the GPO line, the work of the 'Fluffers' and the replacing of a
cracked rail section, with its completion in the nick of time before the first
train of the day. So many films to watch left little time for planning the diary of
meetings for next year, but this was sorted in no time. The full dates are
listed below.
Thanks again to John Hobden for bringing his projection equipment, Runcton Holme for their hospitality, and Bob P. for organising it.
In view of the fact that most previous dates clashed with other activities, thus preventing many members from attending KLOGG meetings, it was decided that instead of the fourth Sunday of the month, dates where possible, should be around the third Sunday.
MARHAM AIRSHOW
David and Janet have also invited us again to observe the 2009 Marham Airshow from their back garden. Although not confirmed yet, the date will possibly be 23 July. Same procedure as this year, bring your own bits of carcass to set fire to.
NOVEMBER 2008 NEWS
NEXT MEETING
Sunday 23rd November From 2 pm:
Film Show, 2009 Programme Planning and general natter
at Runcton Holme Social Club
Unfortunately, Andrew Ingram is unavailable to give a talk on the above date, so it was decided to use the date for showing DVDs, planning the itinerary for 2009 meetings. Also, use it for a general natter, etc. So bring any DVDs that you think other members might enjoy, bring along any new or part complete builds, etc. Also any ideas for meetings for next year (nothing too ambitious).
A few possible suggested repeat dates carried over from this year could be: Summer Test Track Running & Buffet At Runcton; Xmas Bash at Runcton; Running Day at Rickmansworth, Running day at Stamford East, Running Day at Norfolk Joint, Running Day at Wally & Carol's Garden Railway.
LAST MEETING
Sunday 12 October Running day on the Norfolk Joint Railway. 13 members attended. All NJR stock was given an airing, with additional visiting engines from David Atkinson. Also a chance to meet the feline equivalent of Thomas and Friends - a litter of kittens found on Streatham Station (Hope mum has been found). Thanks to J & J for their hospitality.
GCR GALA
By Tony Sparks
Saturday and Sunday had the full gala timetable with freights and so forth. We had the best gala the GCR has ever had in 44 years of its existence. Well over 6 figures in income and possibly 5000 people there on each day. We jammed up Loughborough town centre and also Quorn village, with Rothley lanes coming a close second. There was not an inch of platform space either and we had to resort to pushing people inside to close the doors! The beer tent ran out 3 times and three ticket windows at Loughborough could not cope. Tornado's mail drops were just stunning and the yard area at Quorn was like a football crowd (but better behaved). Leander's maildrop was even more exciting and she stormed through making a real high-speed noisy spectacle of barking exhaust and long whistle. Just fabulous!
For a similar maildrop of nearly equal drama, see this link www.dapsites.com/pictures/videos.htm then get to the pictures and scroll down to (I think) the fourth one showing the Black 5 on a drop. Click the picture to get the video, and turn the sound up!

SOME MUSINGS FROM TED TAYLOR
Greetings!
The Hunstanton Civic Society have just ended a two week exhibition in the only remaining building on the former Hunstanton Station complex. This is the former coal office.
The exhibition was the Lynn to Hunstanton Railway. It was absolutely superb with many photographs, maps and displayed items. I only discovered that it was on by accident. I do not purchase the Lynn News where it was in fact advertised. I would not wrap my fish & chips in that paper. Very sad that perhaps all Kloggies missed it. I have berated the organisers for their lack of publicity and have received a very contrite response. They promise to put it on again in the future and to properly address the publicity. I will keep you informed.
Thanks to the Heritage Railway article in respect of my days on the footplate at Longmoor, I am delighted to say that contact has been made with some of my colleagues of 49 years ago.
I purchase the occasional railway subject DVD but am invariably disappointed with either the content , the photography or both. Thanks to my long standing membership of the Friends of the Settle & Carlisle Line, my attention was drawn to Settle & Carlisle - Seasons of Steam. Published by PSOV at £14.95
If you only buy one railway DVD it must be this one. Absolutely magnificent. Worth the purchase price alone for Green Arrow stalling at Stainforth with a heavy train due to frozen sandboxes. Then, that magnificent locomotive is able to restart and carry on. I am biased 'cos we holiday regularly at Stainforth, but honestly. give yourself a treat. Buy this DVD. Even better if you buy from the FoSCL web site of course,
Kindest regards
Ted Taylor
